Scholarship Report for 2023
The Territorial Sportsmen Scholarship Foundation, Inc. (TSSF) scholarship program began in 1954 with a scholarship awarded to Johnny Harris, a grandson of one of the founders of Juneau—Richard Harris. Since then, 349 scholarships and fellowships have been awarded, totaling $2,017,850.
Currently, there are about 16 students active in our program.
The current TSSF, Inc. Board Members are Doug Larsen, President; Michael Kohan, Vice President; Monika Walker, Secretary-Treasurer; and Grey Mitchell. One position is vacant.
Funding for the scholarship program comes primarily from four sources: The net sales of salmon donated through Territorial Sportsmen’s annual Golden North Salmon Derby, the return on investments in the Foundation’s Endowment Fund, contributions from Territorial Sportsmen, Inc., and direct donations from the public. In 2023, TSSF received $13,051.50 in proceeds from the 2013 derby and $1,175 in donations which were deposited into the TSSF Endowment Fund.
TSSF awarded $52,000 in scholarships in 2023. We granted $12,000 undergraduate scholarships to Carlynn Casperson, Madeline Germain, Samantha Mead, and Hayden Kuzakin to attend a 4-year academic degree program at an accredited university or college. Additionally, TSSF awarded $3,000 to Kai Hargrave and $1,000 to Preston Williams (2nd award) for vocational/technical programs.
